The Denver Sound – The 90's (cont.)
At the same time as the late 80s and early 90s punk scene, some former punk/goth kids started making a new type of music in Denver. David Eugene Edwards and Jefferey-Paul Norlander had played in rock bands together since the mid 80s but in the later part of the decade they formed a group called the Denver Gentlemen. The group made traditional roots influenced music but also present were elements of goth and fire & brimstone religious lyrics. In 1992 Edwards left the band and formed 16 Horsepower. He was replaced by Slim Cessna and Frank Hauser Jr. Two years later Hauser and Cessna formed Slim Cessna's Auto Club The Auto Club played twisted country music, similar to 16 Horsepower and Denver Gentlemen's twisted take on folk. The following year, Norlander joined 16 Horsepower and a man named Munly released his first album. 16 Horsepower has disbanded and turned into Woven Hand and Lilium. Along with Tarantella and Devotchka, these groups of bands unintentionally created a music scene that is growingly being referred to as 'the Denver Sound' across Europe and America. It is likely the most important music to come from Denver in regards to both originality and quality. 'The Denver Sound' name comes from not really knowing how to describe the music of these bands but people in Europe noticing the only bands making music like this come from Denver.
