Leaving Denver – The Early 70's (cont.)
There were other punk bands around but no one had money to release records and no labels were interested in a basement band from Colorado. Bands like the Instants, Varve, and Healers moved west, all to San Francisco. This is a trend Denver bands have followed ever since. The record labels Alternative Tentacles, GSL, and Smooch all have roots in Boulder but all have found more success for their bands after moving to San Francisco. The Instants turned into Angst, who found some success on the SST label touring with labelmates Black Flag and the Minutemen. Frank Black of the Pixies, who have covered their fair share of Angst songs, called the band the biggest influence on his song writing. The Varve were an all girl punk band from Denver that was able to release a single, but only after moving to San Francisco.
